Constructive criticism: what it is, and what it means on QE

Constructive criticism: noun; criticism or advice that is useful and intended to help or improve something, often with an offer of possible solutions (dictionary.com).

Constructive criticism is the process of offering valid and well-reasoned opinions about the work of others, usually involving both positive and negative comments, in a friendly manner rather than an oppositional one. In collaborative work, this kind of criticism is often a valuable tool in raising and maintaining performance standards (Wikipedia).

qeverything is, as stated in its userinfo, "a community devoted to the seeking and giving of constructive criticism for fanfiction based on the band Green Day."

QE was conceived of as being a safe place for GD ficwriters to explore and improve upon their writing abilities. A place where writers who genuinely want to receive concrit can ask for it, and writers/readers who are interested in helping those writers improve can offer both praise and suggestions on anything submitted to the comm for concrit. Anyone is free to post a request for concrit, and we encourage all members to read and respond to all concrit requests. comingclean and the other fiction communities are lovely, but they are meant for completed works, and additionally are not an appropriate forum for concrit unless the writer specifically asks for such in their header info. Hence, the birth of QE. :-)

Note that the definitions of concrit given above explain that it is composed both of the (politely-worded!) pointing out of problems within the story, i.e., spelling mistakes or tense switches, and of praise, i.e., the writer's description of the setting was good and gave the reader a real sense of where the action was taking place.

Please remember when giving concrit that writing is an intensely personal endeavour, and even when you actively want to improve upon your writing and are ready and willing to hear about where it needs some work, it's hard to hear sometimes. Be sensitive to others when you post your comments. Flaming is not tolerated here; comments such as, "It made me want to spork my eyes out," will result in the poster being warned and a second warning will result in them being banned from the community. We have a zero tolerance policy for wank in QE.

Feel free to recommend the comm in casual conversation or in your own journal as a place where people can feel comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, in an environment that encourages growth for writers of any and all levels. We do ask that you refrain from suggesting to writers that they might benefit from the comm unless, again, they have specifically mentioned in their header for a particular post that they are seeking a beta reader or other information/concrit. QE is for people who want to be here; not for people who feel like they've been shuffled here because someone else doesn't like their writing.

Lastly, and I can't emphasize this enough: ANYONE can, and should, offer constructive criticism for fics or whatever else may be posted in this community. Yes, beelzezuk and I are the moderators, but we are only two people and we are both writers ourselves, as our own concrit requests have made clear! It's difficult to find time for both of us to respond to every post, particularly as the comm grows. Our hope is to create an interactive comm where everyone joins in and we all learn together. So come on in and help each other out. :-)

All members of qeverything should read this, please.
